Install PhotoStructure for Desktops on a computer that you can leave powered on for a while, at least during the initial import. Ideally, install it on a computer that stays on **all the time**, so you can access your library whenever you want from wherever you are.

Note that this computer will be hosting your "cloud," so if it's off, your
photos will not available to you or anyone you shared them with.

PhotoStructure for Desktop has installers for Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu Desktop.
Your computer should have at least 4GB of RAM, and [lots of free disk
space](/how-much-disk-space-do-i-need-for-my-photostructure-library/).

- **macOS:** Click the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen, and
choose "About This Mac." You should be running Mac OS X 10.11 or newer, and
have at least 4 GB of RAM. If your Mac was released after 2006, it should be
  64-bit.

- **Windows 10:** Hit your windows key and type "system information". "Version"
should start with `10.`, and _System Type_ should be `x64-based PC`.

- **Ubuntu Desktop:** hit the start key and type "about". The "OS type" should say
  `64-bit`. If you're on the terminal, `uname -p` should say `x86_64`.
Note that PhotoStructure for Desktop requires a running X-display.

PhotoStructure also runs on
[servers](/server/photostructure-for-servers/).
